URL Templates and Link Formatters

PurlHub campaigns drive all sorts of multi-media marketing projects, delivering in batch volume, quota's of unique Personalized URL's across highly refined industry segments and data driven niches.  A handful of purlHub special parameters and options apply to these URL's, any of which may be key to deriving useful analytics and reporting data from results of a campaign.

PurlHub simplifies and unifies the management of these URL's and options via the Personalized URL Templates tool found in each Campaign's "URL Formatting" tab.  These templates and formatters power the creation and access to batches of campaign URL's in a defined, consistent, and uniform manner.  Additionally, the same tool-set powers the unique interactive links generated on-the-fly for dynamic personalized marketing campaigns (signup emails, thank-you emails, invite-a-friend programs).

Configuring your Personalized URL Templates is an important step and enables several convenience features.  Along with supporting rendering personalized interactive links, setting up campaign URL templates enables the following features in a campaign's List Manager tab:

  • pURL previewer "View pURL" link in the (when hovering over a contact row).

  • "Generate URLs with purlCodes" option in the Exporter diaog.

  • Createing QR Codes support in both the Exporter dialog and "Create QR Code" links.

The "View pURL" link in List Data rows, opens a new window or tab in your browser to the contact's Personalized Landing page, in "Draft View" to ensure that the campaign's "Live" tracking data is kept clean.  The "Create QR Code" link creates a 2-dimensional barcode image with the URL encoded along with special tracking flags which identify that the visit originated via "QR-Code".

Setting Up a campaign URL Template

Firstly, you'll need to know the Hostname and Path of the server where your pURL Landing Page is hosted.  Start by clicking the button " + Create URL Template" on the URL Formatting tab of your campaign.  In the dialog window that opens, enter a name in the "Short Name" field.  You may need to determine a "Format Type";  By default "path" is selected - indicating that the unique URL component (purlCode) resides in the Path part of the URI, like a file name or directory.  If you are hosting in subdomain fashion, the unique URL component exists in the Hostname (usually before the first period), and you'll need to select "subdomain" from the Format Type selector.  In "query string" mode the unique URL component exists as a URL parameter (aka: GET parameter).

In the "URL Template"  field, enter the hostname and path of your hosted campaign Landing Page.  If your Format Type is "path", leave off the file name, move the cursor to the position where the file name would be and click "insert code", replacing the file name with "{purlCode}".   If your format type is "subdomain", leave off the "www." component of the hostname, move the cursor to the position where the "www." would have been, and clck "insert code", replacing the "www" with the string "{purlCode}".

Lastly, add any special URL parameters that suit this URL Format to the right hand side of the URL Template delimited by a "?" (i.e. custom tracking tags for this URL Format: "?pht_medium=Email").

Finally, click the "Save" button.   The URL Template will be validated and then tested via simulated HTTP request in the URL Formatting tab.  Any errors will be shown as warnings just below the URL.
